Rally scoring

Also called: Rally point scoring

By DinkPedia Editors · Updated

Definition

Rally scoring is a scoring method in which the singles player or doubles team that wins each rally scores a point, whether or not they were serving. Under the 2026 USA Pickleball Official Rulebook, side-out scoring is still the standard, and rally scoring is a provisionally approved option (Rule 14.A).

How it works

Standard pickleball uses side-out scoring. Rule 4.A says a point is scored by serving and winning the rally. Only the serving side can score. Games typically go to 11, win by 2.

Rally scoring is different. Rule 14.A is a provisional option for singles and doubles. Under Rule 14.A.2, whichever singles player or doubles team wins the rally scores the point. Every finished rally adds a point.

Key Rule 14.A changes:

  • Calling the score (14.A.3). Call two numbers: server’s score, then receiver’s score (not the three-number doubles call).
  • Doubles serving (14.A.4 and 14.A.5). After a side out, only one player on the team serves before the next side out. The server still switches sides after each point won until the serving team loses a rally.

All other standard rules still apply unless Section 14 changes them (Rule 14.A.1).

In tournaments, Rule 15.C.2 lists provisional rally-scoring formats. Directors may use them, with exceptions such as double-elimination doubles, 2026 USA Pickleball Golden Ticket events, and the 2026 USA Pickleball National Championship events. Check the event packet; do not assume rally scoring is on.

Quick example

Under side-out scoring at 5–4–2, only the serving team can move from 5 to 6. If the receivers win the rally, they do not get a point; serve rotates or sides out.

Under rally scoring at 5–4, that same rally always adds a point. If the receivers win it, the score becomes 5–5 and they serve next. Points come faster, and long stretches with no scoring are less common.

Common confusion

Rally scoring has not replaced side-out scoring as the USA Pickleball default. The 2026 rulebook still describes standard scoring as points only when the serving team wins the rally, and points to Rule 14.A as the provisional option. Ask before you play which format you are using and how the score will be called.

Rally scoring is also not the same as skinny singles / mini-singles. Mini-singles (Rule 14.B) is a half-court singles variation. You can play it with standard scoring; rally scoring is a separate Section 14 option.

FAQ

Is rally scoring the official default in 2026?
No. Side-out scoring under Rule 4.A is still the standard. Rally scoring is provisionally approved as an option under Rule 14.A.

How do you call the score in doubles rally scoring?
As two numbers: server’s score, then receiver’s score (Rule 14.A.3).

Do both partners still serve in doubles rally scoring?
No. Rule 14.A.5 says only one player on a team serves before a side out. After the serving team loses the rally, service goes to the opponents.
