Start here: learn pickleball rules in order

New to pickleball? Read these in order. Each page opens with a short answer, cites the 2026 USA Pickleball rulebook by section number, and ends with what to read next.

  1. How a rally works

After the serve, the ball must bounce once on each side before anyone may volley it. Then volleys are allowed, but not from the kitchen.

  2. Serving, scoring, and who stands where

In doubles, your positions follow your team’s score, and the game starts at 0-0-2. Learn the starting-server shortcut and what happens when someone gets it wrong.

  3. Line calls

Lines are in, except the kitchen line on a serve. You call your own side, and when in doubt, it’s in.

  4. The kitchen in real play

You can stand in the kitchen. You can’t volley while touching it, and your follow-through counts.

  5. Faults that surprise new players

Getting hit by the ball loses the rally. Reaching over the net before the ball crosses is a fault, but following through over it is fine.

  6. Playing in the Arizona heat

If you play in the Phoenix area, plan around summer heat before you plan around strategy.
